Advice time!!

Mom said that she thinks that I need to have my teeth cleaned. I have a big hunk of tarter or some kind of funk stuck in my front teeth and my breath smells, um, gross. (Her words not mine)

Now MOM wants some advice from Dog Mom and Dads. Do you get your dogs teeth cleaned at the vet and if so have you done it at the age of 8 (almost 9 next month is my birth week, more on that later). Mom is a giant worry wart and is afraid I might be too old (whatever) and is worried about me being put under for tooth cleaning.

now I want some advice from the Dogs. SERIOUSLY, do I look like I need my teeth cleaned?

I need a dentist. I have some funk in my teeth.

The Humans are scheduling a 'consultation' with my VET. I might go hide at Shaq's house under that giant bed.

I haven't needed to have my teefers cleaned yet, but my siblings have. Our vet uses EKG to monitor our hearts and takes other necessary precautions (like pre-op bloodwork) to make sure we're going to be okay. In fact, Bunny, Ernies and KST will all be getting dentals this year. Our vet always it's a greater risk to our health to have teefer issues than anesthesia. My mom also brushes our teef. Joe--I knocked out most of my teeth to avoid this problem. My sissy and I have never had our teeths cleaned. The ones that are left in my mouth are ok and my sissy has a mouthful of perfect ones. We have a lot of chews/bones to clean 'em. Definitely best to consult with the v-e-t. S/he can check your hearts and things and let you know if you need 'em all cleaned. And then tell your mom that you need more chews. And also that I need more, too.

And, like Martha, I think your butt shot ROCKS.

I have not had to have my teeth cleaned yet, but muzzer said that Nigel and Toby both had it done. Like everyone says, they were monitored carefully, and there came a time with both of them when the VET said...no more teeth cleanings for (insert name) the risk is not worth the reward.

I like my tooth brush, and I let muzzer use gauze and baking soda for bad spots. Can you figure whey I am good about this and terrible about being groomed? Me neither.

Well we have never had ours cleaned PL2 tried once but we kept eating the tooth paste. Going under anaesthesia is a big thing Joey. Aks the Vet if you really really need it. Couldn't you try something else??Like some kind of eating thing that cleans your mouth??(a bone, carott ect??and at least then it would be fun )Love A+A

I think you just need a turkey neck, or maybe a few chicken necks, because you're a bit smaller than me. I get a turkey neck every other day and my teeth are perfect! I'll probably never need to get them cleaned. I'm 9 in May (we're almost exactly the same age!), but mom says she'd probably be okay with me going under, but that might be because she's in total denial about my age. Her's too, for that matter.

Last time I went under was the xmas before last. I was fine. My vets did tons of blood work first to make sure everything was cool first. You should ask Ike's mom. She works at the vet!

Good luck with the teeth cleaning thing. We haven't been down that road. We have done lots of chews and I think we let Mom brush our teeth like once, but that was it. Let us know how it goes!

From your picture, we don't think your teeth look that bad. Maybe your mom needs to give you listerine breath strips?

A couple of years ago, BLU's teeth were pretty yellow. The girl switched her food to Nutro Dental and started buying more rawhides. Her teeth got nice and white again. The vet looked at her teeth and asked if we went to another vet to get them cleaned!

It's good your mom is asking your vet. A lot of the dogs that eat raw bones have very clean teeth. Our servant tried feeding us raw, but it was a disaster. She brushes all of our teeth a couple of times a week, and has never had to have us have them scaled.
BUT gunky teeth can harbor bacterial infections (that's what stinks) and THAT can damage a dog's heart and/or kidneys, and THAT is Bad News.
No human toothpaste - too much floride is dangerous to us - some yummy chicken flavored toothpaste or baking soda.

Yes, all 5 of us get our teeth cleaned every year. Abby is now 13 and still gets hers cleaned too. It actually helps with their health, cuz bad teeth and gums can lead to MANY other health problems!

Now get your little tailless butt to the vet!!

Hi Joe,

I have never got my teeth clean at the vet and they are still sparking clean for my age.

I think the following helps

1) no wet food - wet food helps tartar build up
2) bones chewing once every week helps to get rid of the tartar.

Oh yeah, if you really need to, you must remember to get the vet to do some tests on you (blood test) to make sure that you can go under GA for the teeth scaling.

Hello Joey,

Well whe nI cam eot live here I had quite a lot of tartar/plaque on my teeth. The vet said he didn't want to put me under, and for ma and pa to try a few raw bones and brushing. I didn't like the brushing at first (I got on fin with the bones though!), but now I actually enjoy it. Ma also found some powder called "Plaque Off" that I get on my food. It's a natural seaweed product and has worked really well to clean them up. Maybe your mum could see if it's available over there, if not we could send you a pot. You only need a tiny amount every day so a pot should last a year for a guy your size!

Butt shot! Butt shot! Where's it at, dude?

My Grandpa Angus live to be 13 years old and he never got his teethies cleaned, but I think that because he was an Airedale he didn't much use them, just swallowed everything whole!

I eat lotsa kibble and get chewy bones almost every night (but I also tend to swallow things whole, so don't use my toothies on food all that much).

Also, in the summer, I like to have the garden hose put in my mouth for a good rinse.

Our teefies have not been cleaned out by vets before becoz our teefies are still sparkling white! But my mommy brushes out teefies with a kiddos brush & kiddo toothpaste once a week or once every two weeks depending on whether she remembers or not. I do think your teefies need to be cleaned out a little bit but I really think your front teefies need to be straightened!

I've had my teeth cleaned twice already because my teeth were funky. My mom said that as long as you do the pre-op bloodwork and your vet has good monitoring equipment and doesn't use an anesthetic protocol from the '50s you will be fine. Most vets use the same or almost the same anesthesia as they use in people and monitor dogs closely. They often put us on IV fluids too so our BP doesn't drop. She also says (what a know it all!) that if you let your teeth get too yucky, you can get an infection around your heart and damage your kidneys.
Hope this helps.
Ike

Your teeth aren't too bad Joe. I have only had mine cleaned once by Jeannie with a toothbrush and a foul smelling paste, which I have since refused to have anything to do with!

My Vet advises good chews such as Pedigree Dentastix (not sure if they are sold in USA thoug) I get one of those a day.

But Jeannie says to consult the vet - they will know best for your health.

I've never had my teeth cleaned. I think your's look fine. Tell your Mom to buy you lots of things to chew on and you'll work on scraping it off yourself. Going to the vet is totally not the answer! I avoid the vet as much as I can.
Good luck!

Dear Joe's Mommy -

I had a baby that needed her teeth cleaned at age 14 or 15. She was sedated was fine after the process. I think that a young lad like Joe would be fine if he is healthy otherwise.

Dear Joe -

I have my teefers cleaned once a year :( Even though I chew on lotsa bones and eat kibble, my teeth still need a good cleaning. The vet said something about dachsies (that would be me!)being prone to having bad teeth. I've even had to have some pulled :( My mama still had one of her old dachsies teefers cleaned at age 15!!

My name is Mabel and I live in London with my Mum. Apprently I look a bit like a sheep.

I was just Googling and came across this.
My Mum told me about the dog she had before she got me. I call him Great-Uncle Basil. He died when he was 20! I'm only 8 months old and even I know that like ancient!

Anyway, Basil was 16 when he got his toofs cleaned for the first time. The vet said he was really strong and had a good heart so he wasn't worried. Mum said he has some really gnarly bed-head after it though.
